Understanding Your Cycle: Optimizing Ovulation for Conception

If you are trying to find ways to get pregnant, most probably you are just starting to try, or have been struggling with conceiving. There seems to be a common perception that getting pregnant should be the easiest thing in the world, and that just by having sex you should get pregnant right away. But if you want the truth, then there are only a few days each month when the conditions are ripe for pregnancy, and even still there is only around a 25% chance of successful conception on these days. So there are only twelve fertile windows a year.

Putting this in perspective means that you can get clever about trying for a baby and instead of sex all the time, think of sex at the right time. If you're asking yourself 'how can I get pregnant quickly?' then you must, must think about timing. It may be surprising to learn that not many women get this right. The main reason is because so many hold to the common misconception that they ovulate on the 14th day of their menstrual cycle. If everyone had a perfect twenty eight day cycle and ovulated right in the middle, then maybe this would be true. The truth is that each woman's menstrual cycle is vastly different, and ovulation even varies monthly.

Knowing your own rhythm is vital to understanding when you ovulate. Remember that ovulation very often changes each month, so keeping records is important for getting pregnant faster.

There are a couple of ways to check for ovulation each month. A basal body temperature chart is one of the most common ways. Upon waking each morning (before getting out of bed) check your temperature with a basal body thermometer and keep a record of it. You can see when you are ovulating because your chart will register a slight rise in temperature on the days of ovulation, so you can notice a pattern developing. This temperature rise will tell you the times when you are at your fertile peak, so having sex at these times is a must.

Remember that when trying to fall pregnant the best way to go about it is to have 'waiting' sperm for the egg. This of course is done by having intercourse prior to ovulation. Sperm live for about three or five days inside a woman, but an eggs life is only approximately one or two days. To ensure there are sperm waiting try to have intercourse a couple of days before ovulation is due, it's a critical factor in making your chances of pregnancy better.

You can also purchase ovulation kits that can tell when ovulation is going to happen. For example there are mini microscopes available which show hormonal patterns in your saliva.

Checking the pattern of your saliva is done each morning (like with the basal body charts). Usually there will be a change in the pattern (very distinctly) about thirty six hours before ovulation, and this will continue until ovulation is finished when the pattern will return to normal. Sex on the days when the pattern changes will increase your chances of getting pregnant, some women even use this microscope for contraceptive purposes.

It is very important to be aware of your body. If you are having trouble conceiving, don't run blindly into IVF or hormonal treatments, consider all the available natural supplements and conception aids and methods beforehand.
