A wide variety of materials may be used to make your own shelf liners. Requirements include being firm enough to prevent wrinkling, easy to clean and non-absorbent. Recycled vinyl shower curtains and plastic-coated table cloths work well. Once the shelf surface is measured, the liner is cut to fit edge-to-edge. Double-stick tape is used to hold the liner in place. Making your own shelf liner is a simple job that takes only minutes to complete.
Measure and note the length and width of the shelf. Lay your liner material out on a flat, smooth surface. Using a yardstick and marker, mark cutting lines on the liner in a rectangle, the same size as the shelf. Use a T-square so the corners will be 90 degrees. Cut the liner with scissors on the inside of the cutting lines so the liner will be slightly smaller than the shelf.
Test-fit the liner on the shelf and trim if necessary.Once you are satisfied with the fit, remove the liner. Apply double-stick tape to the bottom side of the liner, just inside and along the entire perimeter.
Replace the liner on the shelf. Smooth out any wrinkles. Rub your fingers over the edges of the liner to adhere the double-stick tape to the shelf.
