DIY Bottle Cutter: Safe & Easy Homemade Solution

Homemade bottle cutters can be used to make vases or ornaments at home. They work by holding a bottle securely into place while you use a glass cutter to score around the bottle. This should create a clean break in the bottle where the score is made. Using a bottle cutter is a safer method than just trying to cut a bottle while holding it; your grip around the bottle while holding it could result in the bottle shattering in your hand.

Bottle Holder

  • Clamp the wood to a wood bench and cut the wood three times with the saw. Make two pieces 18 inches long, one piece 12 inches long and one piece 7 inches long.

  • Cut one edge of each 18-inch piece of wood at an angle so each piece fits flush against the other. Put the two 18-inch pieces together in the shape of a "V" and glue them to hold them in place so you can screw them together.

  • Glue and then screw the 7-inch piece of wood at the bottom of the "V" shape, where the ends come together. This will create a place for the bottle to stop from sliding off the wood.

  • Glue and nail the 12-inch piece of wood to the short side of the "V" to use as a holding grip.

  • Sand the wood to make it smooth and more manageable.

Bottle Cutters

  • Place a steel rod inside the bottle. Slide the rod into the bottle and set it so it catches horizontally at the base of the bottle neck, with each end of the steel rod sitting at each end of the space where the bottleneck meets the rest of the bottle. This rod will connect and secure the bottle to the wooden "V" bottle cutter.

  • Lay the bottle in the V-shaped device so the bottom of the bottle sits at the intersection of the "V" shape and the top of the bottle rests between the two pieces of wood. The neck of the bottle should rest towards the opening of the "V" shape.

  • Secure the bottle to the "V" by connecting the steel rod to the "V". To do this, use the ground rod connector, which will be connected to the horizontal steel rod in the bottle and come out the bottleneck. Screw the ground rod connector to the "V" structure.

  • Cut the bottle with a glass cutter by carefully holding the cutter to the bottle as you rotate the bottle within the "V" structure holding device.

  • Cut the glass around the entire bottle, then slowly and carefully tap your finger around the cut area until you hear a slight cracking sound. Carefully remove the cut bottle from the wooden "V" bottle cutter.
