Optic Neuritis: Understanding Symptoms, Causes & Home Remedies

A little kid recently asked me how our little eyes can see such big things! I was lost for words—how do they, indeed! Our eyes are such powerful organs and yet we seldom pay them that attention, until they cause us trouble.

The term Optic Neuritis is defined as the inflammation of the nerves in the eyes. The condition is a leading cause of vision loss. It is also associated with acute pain in the eye, whenever there is some eye movement. Other than the main two symptoms mentioned above, there are many more in the list. The condition may also be associated with headache, nausea, fever, reduced peripheral vision and impaired color vision.

Alcohol consumption along with some deficiency of nutrition can cause optic neuritis. Factors like the deficiency of Vitamin B12 can also increase the risk of optic neuritis. Smoking also increases the chances of this condition. It is often caused by the toxins and excessive acids present in the blood and other body fluids. The optic nerve inflammation can also be the result of viral, fungal or bacterial infections like measles, chicken pox, mumps and a host of such diseases. Besides, it may be caused due to trauma from external force and penetrating trauma. Other factors, which lead to this condition, may comprise bones dislocation, heavy pressure on nerve, incorrect eating habits and several genetic conditions.
