What happens inside the ear? Our ears are complex structures that maintain pressure inside with respect to the environment around us (1). Of the inner, middle and outer ear, the middle ear is connected to the Eustachian tubes. Any obstruction in these tubes hinders fluid drainage, thereby blocking the ears. Blocked ears cannot equalize pressure within your ears, and this leads to the aforementioned symptoms.

Ears are blocked due to several reasons.

  1. Excessive ear wax buildup (2)
  2. Cold and blocked nose
  3. Allergies
  4. Sinus problems (3)
  5. Water accumulation in the ear
  6. Altitude changes

You can prepare a homemade solution using 1 cup of hot sterilized water, half a spoon of non-iodized salt and half a spoon of baking soda.
