Safe Fish Choices: Navigating Mercury Levels for Healthy Eating

Question
I love fish, and have eaten tuna and salmon for years. However, now there is news of mercury in such fish. Is there any safe fish you can recommend?

Answer
Hello Jim!

Thank you for your nutrition question. You can still eat tuna just eat more of the lighter version. According to the FDA, tuna steak and canned albacore (white) tuna generally contain up to three times more mercury than canned light tuna.
As for fish I would recommend fish lowest in mercury include: Wild salmon, sardines, squid, Arctic char, Atlantic Summer Flounder (Flukes), Pacific flounder, sanddabs, and scallops (these last three should be eaten once per month due to habitat damage or to allow their population to recover).  Hope this helps.
