Weight Loss for Busy Moms: Nutrition & Sustainable Strategies

Question
Hi George,
I am a 33 year old mother of a very active litle girl. Over the last 6 years I have put on 50-60 pounds and I am one of those women who wants to wake up in the morning and be a size 8 again. I have tried several diets I do like some immediate gratification so I am disappointed when nothing happens in a couple weeks I give up.
My normal day does not consist of the most important meal BREAKFAST. I read eat 3-5 meals a day you would think that would excite me but I enjoy lunch with my daughter sometimes not just a sandwich it might include MR.Ronald McDonald, and I eat dinner with my husband could be a cooked meal or the local Pizza place.
I try to eat breakfast lunch and dinner healthy but I don't stick to it. Finally my question Can I do protein shakes and bars to get me to dinner and eat a balanced meal for dinner is that good enough?

Answer
Hello Renee!

Thank you for your nutrition question.  Skipping breakfast can lead to weight gain as many studies have shown.  People that eat breakfast tend to be thinner and have a lower body mass index.  Having a protein shake in the morning would be a good start along with some fresh fruit. I would recommend checking out www.mypyramid.gov where you can create a healthy eating plan tailored to your calorie needs. Just enter your age, gender, and activity level. Remember that you need at least 30-60 minutes of exercise daily.  Try walking, jogging, bikeriding, swimming, or some light weight training to get your body leaner and burning calories again.
