Sugar Alcohols and Blood Sugar: A Comprehensive Overview

Question
Does sugar alcohol have any effect on blood levels of glucose and triglycerides?  If so, is it comparable to sugar.  Thank you for your generous help.

Answer
Sugar alcohols are broken down differently than regular sugar. This means it is  absorbed less in the body then sugar. It is estimated that about half of the sugar alcohols consumed do eventually turn into blood glucose. Because there are no firm guidelines established for labels, many manufacturers of sugar-free foods subtract dietary fiber and all the grams of sugar alcohol from the total carbohydrate.

However, it is important to realize that although sugar-free foods may be lower in carbohydrate, they do not always have fewer calories, which is an important factor to consider for those needing to lose weight. Additionally, sugar alcohols can cause gas, diarrhea or bloating in some individuals.
