Understanding Post-Breakfast Hunger & Shaking: Is It Normal?

Question
Hi Laura. Thanks for answering this question.
In the morning i have breakfast- its about a big bowl of cereal with no milk
and then about 2 hours later i get really hungry and my body starts to shake
and then once i eat lunch im fine again. Is this normal? i eat regularly
throughout the day and snack too and i only get that in between breakfast
and lunch or in between breakfast and my first snack. Thank you.

Answer
Dear Abby, Most cereals eaten alone are high in carbohydrate. To digest a carbohydrate meal, the body has to send out insulin to digest the sugar in the digested carbohydrate. Insulin causes the blood sugar to lower causing the shakes and causing you to get hungry again. To try to counteract this insulin reaction or also called a low blood sugar reaction, add some protein to your meal. Milk or soy milk has protein. Changing your meal to an egg and toast is also an option. So add some protein and see if that gets rid of those shakes. If it continues, your doctor can order blood work to check your sugar levels after drinking a sugar drink. Hope that helps, Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
