Metformin for Weight Loss: What You Need to Know

hi laurie, is 500mg metformin effective for weight loss. i was diagnosed hyperglycemia about 3 weeks ago. should i go to 1000mg to see results. does it also take care of appetite too. i would be grateful for more information on this.

Hi Christoper,

To my knowledge, metformin is only prescribed to help with blood glucose control in insulin-resistant patients. I have never heard of a connection with weight loss and taking this drug.
And I've never heard of it having an effect on appetite either.

Of course, if you can lose weight it will help with blood sugar control, too. But the medicine will help control blood sugar in the mean time.
