Preparing for Your First Physical Exam: Addressing Concerns & Anxiety

Question
Well, I've tried in the past, obviously with no success. Most excercizes are too uncomfortable or awkward to do, and not eating as much gets me really bored. Also, I don't really have any time to do that stuff, and the time I would have is not very good because it would be in a crowded environment. I don't want people seeing me jiggling away or running or whatever. And I really doubt that things won't come up during the physical. What if they can't feel through to my organs ? And don't you have to wearing very little during the whole thing ?

-----Question-----
I am supposed to be having a full physical exam soon. I've never had one, but I found some basic info on them. My question is, what can I expect, or will it be different because of my weight ? I'm 5'10 tall and weigh about 300 pounds. I have a 52' waist and a large stomach with rolls of fat that hang over. In the physical they push into your stomach for your kidneys and organs, and so I think I'd be really embarassed because of my fat. My belly button looks like a crease between my top and bottom roll, especially when I sit down. I'm thinking that the doctor will most likely say something about my fat belly, and my penis looks much smaller because I have fat thighs, and a fat pad down there. Should I try to suck it in, or just deal with the embarassment and let it all hang out. ? What can I expect ? Thanks.
-----Answer-----
Hey, Jason. Thanks for your question.

While admittedly you have a problem with weight that requires attention that you should work on to make your life better, more fun and more healthy, I don't think you have anything to worry about during the medical exam.

Keep in mind - doctors are professionals. They have seen it all. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, BUT THEY HAVE SEEN BIGGER AND MORE OVERWEIGHT PEOPLE THAN YOU. It wouldn't even occur to them to make fun of you or look at your the wrong way. Most likely, they won't even comment on your weight, despite the fact that it is so critical to you future life.

Don't suck anything in at the exam. Behave in a mature way and forget about embarassment. The doctor is going to be an experienced, educated, older professional and not some teenage girl who would giggle when looking at something she has never seen before.

Thanks, and I hope this helps.

Also, are you planning to lose weight? If so, do you have a strategy? If not  - why not?

I look forward to following up with you and I hope my answer to your question is clear.

Thanks.

Answer
Hey, Jason. Thanks for following up. There is so much I wish I could tell you  - certainly more than this e-mail can carry. But let me just ask you this - does the opinion of other people and their stupid giggles (they must be stupid of the giggle at you) mean more to you than being more healthy, more energetic, more beautiful, more attractive to women and longer living?

Sure, exercise takes time to get results. But hey - ALL GOOD THINGS IN LIFE TAKE TIME TO GET! This includes speaking a language, graduating from college, learning how to play a musical instrument or a sport. If losing weight was an easy and quick process, there would be no overweight people in the world. But hey - the rewards of getting there FAR OUTWEIGHT the effort that you would put into it.

I am sorry, I don't mean to hammer on you - it's not my place. It is just that I have seen a few lives literally change so dramatically after losing those pounds that I can't help but try and convince you that ... there are two ways to live the rest of your life - with or without that excess wait, and believe me from my experience - those are two very different lives. And not doing what you want because of some people giggling at you is selling your life too cheaply. I am sure you know what I mean.

And hey, if you have a moment, check out www.practicalhappiness.com - and go to "Powerful Weight Loss" audio program. That program has already changed many lives by providing that missing link to all those people that lack the desire and the motivation to lose weight.

Thanks, and best of luck to you.

And I apologize if I was too harsh again. It's just because I care.

Sincerely,
