Melting Scrap Silver: A Guide to Purification and Value

Question
For years i have scrapped what i believe to be silver points from different electrical connections. I have about 15 lbs. How do i go about melting the silver to make sure it is not contaminatd by other materials that  my have adhered to the points. Or for the past 20 years have i just wasted  my time.

Answer
Hello don,

Apologies for the slow response, I had to get away after the madness leading up to Xmas.

As you have a large quantity of material you should be able to have the metal refined by a precious metal refiner.
I don't know what the deal is where you are, but PW Beck in Australia will do it as a purchase type arrangement where you only pay for the assay and they will buy the refined metal from you at market.
If you want to do it yourself - it is a messy job - you should check my previous answers regarding this.

Let me know if you require further clarification.
The good news is that I don't believe that you've been wasting your time!

Cheers.,P
