QuestionHello, I had neglected to remove my rhodium plated ring during some routine cleaning with a bleach/ammonia based product and though I didnt use the hand on which my ring is, some must have splashed on it and now there are some black dots on my ring from what I assume is the interaction. Can this be repaired? cleaned? ANYTHING? or am I out of luck?
Thanks, E.
AnswerErika, generally rhodium is not harmfully affected by a splash here or there. I wonder if the plate is actually rhodium?
My suggestion is to use a good chemically treated polishing cloth like a "sunshine" cloth sold by RioGrande and available for purchase or order from crafts store and jewelry stores who purchase from Rio. Go gently and wipe with little pressure.
If the spot does not go away, have a jeweler very gently buff the ring with a very fine polish rouge, no abrasive compounds at all. A light touch should remove the blemish. A heavy touch will remove the plate and then you are far worse off.
Please do not try toothpaste or other home remedies on the ring. I sugget the cloth first. The damage is not likely deep or permanent.
