Wedding Ring Repair: Loose Diamond - What to Expect & Where to Go

Question
Hi Thomas,
My center diamond is loose in my wedding ring so I need to have it tightened, but I don't know who to bring it to, how to choose, who to trust with something like that and what to expect -- leave it over night or wait for it to be tightened.  It came from Costco.  Any light you can shed will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Answer
Dear Greer, I do not know much of Costco since that company is not in my area.  They might do the work but I would expect that to be sent off and take some time.  You might ask and find out for certain.

As for using a local jeweler, that is likely your best and quickest source for someone to tighten the stone.  Look for one of the better local businesses and be sure they have a bench jeweler in house. The bench jeweler is the one who actually does the work. Without the bench jeweler, the store likely sends the work out to be done.  Personally, that might be fine but I prefer to be able to see and perhaps speak with the person doing the work and that means at the store.  This way the jeweler can also look at your ring and perhaps tell you why the stone might be loose and if this is something Costco should cover for free. Otherwise, you can find out what is needed to do the work and what the cost will be to you.

If this is a very simple tightening, the store staff may ask if you want to wait on the work.  If more is involved or the jeweler is busy, you should leave the ring. That is why you choose a reputable store and one of the better ones and be comfortable with that.  You do not want to insist on while you wait work since that will likely cost more as an accommodation to fit into the days work and you may not get the best job if the jeweler is rushed.  You did not purchase the ring at the local jewelers and if they need time to do the work, be happy with that.  When you pick up the ring, check it for tightness and you are on your way.

I do hope this gives you some direction and idea of what to do.
