QuestionHello,
your site came up when I querried about buying jewelry in Idar Oberstein. Will be there in early Oct 2009, and would like recommendations on either best jewelers or best gemcutters - as I have a jeweler back home that will set most anything I find.
am looking for a really intensely colored natural untreated amethyst, probably "barrel shape" 20 x 12, ok with either cabachon or faceted
need a 14mm round stone for a "crown setting" ring, this could be the amethyst, or anything else that comes in that size and is under $1000.00USD
also looking for an very nice quality emerald, emerald cut, probably about 8 x 6 or so
or, I could put a square emerald in a 10 x 10 setting . . . .
AND should I purchase tanzanite there, or is there a better source in europe? I will be in southern Germany for octoberfest, then Budapest, Vienna and Prague. Can travel to smaller villages around those areas if need be.

AnswerDear Maria,
Thanks for your email , Idar Oberstein has been a major gemstone cutting village, cutting amethyst for at least several hundred years .Its was very important for Opal cutting when rough opal was abundant. You are best to write directly to a company and ask if they are handling the stones you desire. Times have changed very much since we were there but I am sure that there should be plenty about them online. You could also try the GIA for a listing of top stone cutters and dealers . In the meantime please try this directory http://art-and-entertainment.europages.co.uk/business-directory-europe/did-art19...
there should be many more online , you should search gemstones and jewellery Idar Oberstein.
