Questionhello:
I am having the worst time selecting bouquet colors. My BMs are wearing aubergine dresses and i guess i didnt realize that most purple flowers i like have a blue under tone and clash. I would love to carry yellow mini calla lillies for my bouquet so would love for the girls to have a small yellow accent in their bouquet to tie back to mine. What colors would you recommend for the BMs? and am i crazy for wanting a yellow bouquet for mine, considering their aubergine dresses? Our wedding is this May, the 16th.
Thanks so much in advance!
AnswerHi Danielle!
Congratulations on your upcoming spring wedding! Fun!!
First off, let me assure you that yellow callas look stunning with aubergine dresses. So don't worry about that at all.
You mentioned that the 'purple' flowers that you like have blue undertones. This is true, and actually the flowers are known as 'blues' because of this. Let's considering Aubergine flowers to match the dresses, with perhaps a hint of lime green? (may sound a bit 'off', but when you see the examples I will attach links to, you will see how well they work together)This can tie in with your 'blue' flowers to make it work.

I have always urged brides to consider carrying colors that contrast against their white/offwhite dresses as they show much nicer in photos. I envision your flowers to be perhaps a mix of yellow callas with just a hint of the aubergine.. if not in a flower itself, perhaps by means of the ribbon that wraps your yellow callas together.. something to offset your flowers from your dress and tie the aubergine of your attendants back to you.
Here is an example:

Imagine the ribbon being aubergine. This is an example of a handtied bouquet consisting of JUST yellow callas. This would be pricier, however, as callas (depending on if you go for the large ones or the mini ones) can run you approx. $7 per stem, plus labor from your florist and other charges.
You can also incorporate some mini aubergine callas into your bouquet if you like.. here is an example of what they look like (incase you've never seen them):

Here is another image that shows aubergine callas and lime green together.. these colors, together with yellow, are a nice combination:

or this one (gorgeous!)

Here is a bouquet with your colors, but she has aubergine callas, which you could easily switch for yellows.. you may or may not like the contemporary style of the leaf collar, but that would, of course be something you could change.

I think its important that you pull as much greens in with your flowers as possible, to keep the bouquets looking fresh and spring-like. Too little greens can make the bouquets look too fall-ish.
You have a few options for colors, overall, taking into consideration your desire for yellow callas and your girls being in aubergine: Keep in mind that all flowers go well together.. flowers do not clash when they are in bouquets. Mother Nature is amazing that way ;)
You can combine yellow, aubergine, lime, and those 'blues' that you like.. AS LONG AS you have some aubergine in there to tie them together.. here is an example that is as close as I can find online.. you will see what I mean with this example. This bouquet would look stunning with aubergine.

Here is one that shows aubergine AND purples together.. they look beautiful together!

You can also work with the old standby of whites in with any combination of colors. This might be a nice option for your girls. If you use white, be sure to have some in your bouquet too.

Here are your options that I think you may be happy with:
YOUR BOUQUET: yellow callas, a couple aubergine callas AND lime green cymbidium orchids with aubergine centers, some of your favorite purple flowers and lots of greens.
(Here's what a lime cymbidium looks like:)

GIRLS: go opposite of you. For fun, you can even split up what is in your bouquet and give each girl one of those elements. IE: one carries a small bouquet of yellow callas (just a few), one a posy of the lime cymbids, another a posy of the other floral element you choose..
If you choose to make them all the same, choose one element from your bouquet and mix with some greens to freshen up the look.
MEN: the guys should match the girls as far as colors of flowers.. if you like the idea of separating each floral element for each girl, have the guy she's walking with match her.
GROOM: groom should always have most of the elements of the brides bouquet. His boutonniere should be distinctly different from the guys, somewhat 'fancier'.
REMEMBER! Tone on tone (aubergine flowers against aubergine dresses) won't photograph well. Once your wedding day is over, your flowers will be gone and your photos will be all you have left of your floral memories.. so be sure to use colors that pop in your pictures! You'll be glad you did!
Here are some options for aubergine flowers:
-mini callas
-cymbidium orchids.. come aubergine-ish or lime with aubergine center
-gerbera daisies
-roses
-lilies (large flowers)
I've given you lots to think about. Take the time to go through all the images and a vision of what you like will start to pull together. There are other factors to consider as well.. STYLE of bouquets.. I didn't get into that with you yet as I don't want to overwhelm you.
Let me know what your thoughts are and we can go from there!
Warmest Regards,
Melanie
