Answer
I understand the frustration you must be having. PCOS is a condition characterized by irregular menses, evidence of elevated "male" hormone (it is normal to have some "male" hormone in women)in women and in certain centers classic ultrasound findings of the ovary. Part of the underlying problem has to do with resistance to insulin with abnormal glucose levels noted in some cases. It seems that irregular menses is what is affecting you presently and as long as there are no contraindications, birth control pills treat both the irregularity in your cycle and the elevated male hormone as well. There are other treatments for elevated male hormones as well. Proper nutrition is important, but a low carbohydrate diet finds to be most effective and not a low calorie diet as you are currently on. This extremely low calorie diet can be harmful. Unfortunately as your MD stated, it is a long term problem but very treatable. If pregnancy is desired in the future, you may need help with additional medications. Discussing proper nutrition with your physician or a nutrition consultation would be beneficial.
