PCOS & Pregnancy: Concerns & Timeline - Expert Opinion
QuestionI am 30 years old woman. Its about 10 years that I diagnose with pcod. After then I took birth control pill most of the time maybe 6 years out of this. Now it's under control but still is there. First I want to know if that much birth control pill is not bad for pregnancy? Second if I can wait until 34 to get pregnant?
Thanks
AnswerHi Mari! :-)
You ask questions on alot of different levels. I will give you my opinion, however keep in my that it's an opinion and that I am not a medical professional or a Dr.
Birth control pills themselves should not effect your future fertility that I am aware of. In fact, taking them should have decreased your risks of uterine lining problems that can occur when women do not have monthly menstrual periods and shed their uterine lining each month. As far as waiting until 34 to get pregnant, I would highly recommend against it. The PCOS aside, a woman's natural fertility declines with age, as does the quality of her eggs. The longer you wait to start a family, the more problems that can block you from being able to conceive on your own. The PCOS itself can cause some problems but then the risk of downs syndrome goes up with the Mother's age, as does the risk of miscarriage or inability to fertilize eggs at all because of dna changes to the eggs as a woman ages. Also women who are expected to be 35 or older at the time of delivery are classed as Advanced Maternal Age and require more monitoring by an OB. Now there is no way for you to predict whether you will experience any of these problems or not, but if your desire for a family is strong, I highly recommend against waiting. Once a woman is no longer able to produce fertile eggs of her own, she is limited to using donor eggs or embryos and using IVF procedures which can be very costly.
