Membrane Stripping at 37 Weeks: What to Expect & Labor Timing

Question
Yesterday, my ob-gyn stripped my membranes.  She said my cervix is still firm and posterior.  I am 37 weeks pregnant right now.  The exam was quite painful.  I was wondering is it too early for this to be done?  Also, on average how soon does labor begin after this is done?  I had spotting after the exam for a couple of hours, but the nurse at labor/delivery said that was totally normal.  I have also had more braxton hicks contractions and really light cramping.  Is this all normal as well?  I appreciate your help.
Thank you

Answer
Hello Nichole. It is perfectly normal for your cervix to be firm and posterior at 37 weeks- it is NOT time for this  baby to be born. It was completely useless to strip your membranes at this point and the chances of it bringing on labor are almost nil. You MUST relax and be patient- allow this baby to tell YOU when the time is right. And DON'T let the dr. push you into induction just because it is midweek- they love to get the deliveries over before the weekend. All the best- Cheri.
