Kidney Stones in Pregnancy: Risks, Symptoms & Management

Question
I am 5 months pregnant and have been diagnosed with a kidney stone.  I was having some moderate hematuria and was sent for an ultrasound and it showed a stone that was partially obstructing.  I have been referred to a urologist and my obgyn said he would most likely just want to watch it.  Can you tell me what are the complications of a kidney stone in pregnancy and if there are any symptoms that I would need to report immediately.  Thanks

Answer
If you have a kidney stone, it can block the ureter and cause immense pain in your side. Depending on the severity of the pain, a urologist will either watch it or will insert a "stent" to allow urine to flow around the stone until it passes. YOu should also screen all your urine so that you will know when the stone passes. The only complication is the pain.
