Understanding Fibroids: Symptoms, Diagnosis & Fertility Concerns

Question
"I had two doctors tell me they felt a fibroid when they performed my pelvic exam about 2yrs ago. This year I starting going to a new Obgyn. The nurse practioner performed my exam. I told her I thought I had a fibroid and had been trying to conceive for almost 2yrs with no success. I also told her I had been having lower back pain, burning like numbness feeling in my legs off and on, sometime in my arms too; bloating, constant urination, constipation, a feeling of fullness and gas. I also told her, sometimes I feel like something is pulling and twisting in my lower abdominal/pelvic area. I feel fluttering like feelings off and on in my upper stomache. My abdominal/upper stomache looks swollen. She told me some of my symptoms could be from a fibroid. She did my pelvic exam and told me something felt like a 16 week embyro. She sent me to get a ultra sound. The people who did the ultra sound, they wanted me to have a full bladder to do the abdominal ultra sound, the technician said she couldn't find my ovaries. I went and emptied my bladder and did the vaginal ultra sound. My doctor office called and informed me that the fibroid didn't show up on the ultra-sound, so I didn't have one. Now I'm at a lost. I'm still having all the symptoms I mention earlier. The doctors office didn't act concern about what they felt, when they did the pelvic exam. If I don't have a fibroid, then what did she feel that felt like a 16 week embryo.";

Answer
It sounds very odd, that if a pelvic exam demonstrated a 16 week size uterus, the sonogram showed no evidence of a fibroid. I would repeat the sonogram with a full bladder and  make sure that a careful sonographic exam is done. You certainly have the symptoms of a large fibroid uterus.
