Under Tongue Spot During Pregnancy: What Could It Be?
QuestionI went to te dentist back in Feb and I was 10 weeks pregnant. They found a tiny black/purple spot 1.1mm under my tongue for the first time. I miscarried found out the next day that I had miscarried at 6 weeks and it hadn't expelled. I am now 11 weeks pregnant and went to the dentist yesterday and the same spot is there but hasn't changed, it is still 1.1mm. My dentist feels that it is minor and not serious but wants me to go to an oral surgeon to check it out and maybe biopsy. I am kinda freaking here. I know pregnancy causes changes. I have never had abnormal paps before either and they came back abnormal last pregnancy with negative biopsies and now are abnormal again with this pregnancy. Is is possible that this spot under my tongue could happen because I am pregnanct and could just be a melanin spot or some freckle or tag? Between the two things I feel like I never want to get pregnant again or something bad is going to happen.
AnswerIf there is a persistent spot under your tongue, it should be evaluated further. If it must be biopsied, it is important to do so. It may be a change due to pregnancy, but you can't take the risk of ignoring it. A lesion in the mouth has nothing at all to do with any abnormal PAP smear. It is common to have ASCUS (an abnormal PAP) and we usually do nothing until the pregnancy is over and then pefrom a colposcopy and biopsy. It usually is negative. It still must be evaluated because the risk of cancer is still present. I doubt that the spot (or the PAP) has anything to do with the pregnancy.
