Pregnancy & Beauty: Understanding Common Skin Changes

Pregnancy is definitely a mixed bag of some good and some not-so-good changes that an expectant mother’s body goes through. Each pregnancy is unique, meaning some women can glow bright like a bulb whereas others could look worn out. You will  undergo several changes during pregnancy that you may do not foresee.

Here’s a concise list of beauty changes in body during pregnancy. Read it with a pinch of salt if you know what I mean!

What are the changes during pregnancy?

1. The not-so-desired stretch marks:

Have you ever had your mother or grand mom insisting that you keep from scratching your baby bump? Yes, it is for the very reason to avoid those inescapable stretch marks that authenticates your motherhood! Like it or not, very few and I mean a very meager percentage of women are lucky enough to have a clear belly. There are many stretch mark creams available that claim to work wonders but I am yet to find one mother who has claimed it had worked.

2. Trapped in the Spider Veins:

Increase in hormones boosts blood flow causing tiny veins to become more visible. It could appear on any part of your body but are most common on legs. Too much time on the feet only aggravates the problem. However, spider veins are temporary for most pregnant women. Once you deliver, they vanish gradually.

3. Enjoy shiny and voluminous hair:

Enough of the bad stuff, let’s talk about some extremely welcoming beauty changes that pregnancy brings with it.

Your hair, wow! Did you imagine how beautiful and thick your hair looks now? Thanks to the “good” hormones and healthy diet you will see a reduction in hair fall. But don’t get excited just yet, it’s a temporary change. You would soon start to worry about hair fall and looking bald again!

4. Brown patches or Melasma:

Again, hormones play their part by forming brown patches especially on the face and neck. These blotches become more visible under the sun, therefore, use a sun block before you step out. You could also hide them by applying bronzer. It’s yet a temporary change that shall go away post birth.

5. Too much hair on the body:

Where on one hand you’re enjoying your happy hair days, there’s a flip side to it. Hormones that are responsible for that thick and beautiful hair, those same hormones cause too much hair on the body which of course is not a pleasant sight. You do have a solution to it such as waxing or razor which is safe to use while you’re pregnant. Once you deliver, the hormone levels gradually come back to normal and so shall your growth of hair.

6. Face acne:

You must have been escaping pimples all your life but suddenly see those ugly bumps on one fine morning. The reaction is certainly not a happy one. Welcome to the club! You’re not alone. Many mothers-to-be complain of bad skin days during pregnancy which gets reversed once the baby’s born. As mentioned above, each pregnancy is unique and every expectant mother faces their own set of dilemmas. Please note that you should take oral acne medicines to get rid of them.

7. Strange brown line called Linea Nigra:

One thing that’s common among pregnant women (at least 75 % of them) is this inexplicable brown line that starts from the navel downwards. Increase in the production of melanin results in hyper pigmentation. Nevertheless, it fades away after pregnancy. In case if it doesn’t, try bleaching creams.
