QuestionMy wife is 32, her last period was on July 8, she is about 7 weeks pregnant. She has had two gushes in the last two weeks. Most recently, on Thursday, Aug 26, we went to the ER. The transvag u/s revealed that the baby had a strong heartbeat and was well implanted. However on the other side of the uterus, the doctor {our doctor is on vacation} referred to it as a hematoma. I don't believe it's near where the placenta is forming. Anyway, for the past 2 days, she has been on rest and she bleeds on and off. Is this the same as a subchorionic hematoma? Is bed rest really helping? Is it true that 97% of pregnancies in which a strong heartbeat is detected go on to be normal? Thank you so much for your time
Darren
AnswerWithout actually seeing the report of the sonogram, I can't guarantee what the bleeding was due to. HOwever, most commonly, it is probably a subchrionic hematoma, which occurs due to sequestration of blood in the folds of the developing layers of the placenta (under the chorion). This usually will not effect the baby. As long as there is a good fetal heartbeat and you have no cramping, you need not worry. Even bedrest has not been shown to have any advantage. Just go about your usual activities, but keep an eye on how much bleeding there is. If there is heavier bleeding, notify your doctor and repeat the sonogram.
