Navigating Paternity Issues: A Father's Story of Miscommunication and Disappointment

Question
I was told that I was to be the father of a child to my ex girlfriend and after lot's of arguments things became less amicable during her pregnancy.  I was not informed of my daughter's birth although desperate to be involved.  I met my daughter a week after she was born and what followed was an e-mail from the mother stating that I was, in fact, not the father of the baby as the hospital had got her dates a whole MONTH out and only found this out at birth. To add, she attended both scans plus a third early on in the pregnancy due to a small emergency and nothing was said.  Is she telling the truth and the healthcare could have got it so wrong, or is she simply bluffing to try and get me out of the picture?

Answer
A 44 week pregnancy is a definite possibility though your theory about her making things up to keep you out of the picture is just as much of a possibility. If you want to be sure whether or not you are the father, request a paternity test. If she refuses, you can contact a lawyer who can get a court order to force the issue.  If she won't willingly go for a DNA test, getting a lawyer is definitely worth it if you wish to be in your daughter's life because if she was sure you weren't the father, she would allow it.

Please let me know if I can help you further or with anything else.

Best wishes,
Helen =)
