Female Fertility: Understanding Egg Development and Lifespan
QuestionIs it true that women are born with eggs and never reproduce them? I was reading an article which said at week 18 baby girls have 2 million eggs and never grow anymore. Is that true?
AnswerThat is correct. All the ova that you will ever have is produced at 18 weeks gestation while you are a fetus. There are around 2-3 million eggs produced. When you are born, many of these eggs are dewstoryed and around 300,000 remain. They lie dormant until you puberty when you st arart to ovulate. Then you ovulate every month until around age 50.
