Understanding a Missing Fetal Pole in Early Pregnancy
QuestionAge 25, 1 Child, 30/09/05. I suffered from an ectopic pregnancy April of this year. I found out i was pregnant a few weeks back and i started having pains in the lower abdomin these pains have now stopped. I have had regular trips to the hospital & had 2 sonograms the first sonogram showed the pregnancy sac in my uterus which was a relief to find out it wasn't another ectopic. I went for another sonogram yesterday but they were unable to see anything in my sac, they told me my sac had grown since last week and that i was to go back next week for another sonogram. They told me if they still can't see anything in my sac by next week then its not good news & it would be very worrying as i may have suffered a miscarriage. I have not had any bleeding or any discharge & when the doctor gave me an internal he said that my cervix was healthy. Should you be able to see the fetal pole in the sac at this stage & is it possible to miscarry without realizing. Many thanks
AnswerIf your last period started on September 30, then you are now 6 weeks three days pregnant. Usually, we do not see anything but an empty gestational sac prior to 6 weeks gestation. After 6 weeks gestation we usually can see a fetus and a fetal heartbeat. If the next sonogram does not show a fetus in the gestational sac, I'm afraid that it is a non viable pregnancy and it could be a "blighted ovum".
