Heart Rate Monitors & Pregnancy: Safety and Usage During Early Stages

Question
I am 35.  I currently have no children.  I have been pregnant for less than three weeks (my last period began December 27, 2005).

I would like to continue as much as possible with my current excercise regimen during my pregnancy.  I'm wondering whether it is safe to use the heart rate monitors that are found on most gym equipment (they consist of steel sensors over which you place your hands in order to get your heart rate).

I have a scale at home which will give you a body fat percentage whenever you stand (in bare feet) on the stainless steel sensors located on the top of it.  The instructions caution that pregnant women should not use the sensors.  I was wondering if the same held true for the heart rate sensors on gym equipment.  Should I avoid touching these?

Answer
I am not aware of the construction or workings of the heart monitors attached to exercise equipment. Until you find out whether any electrical impulses pass from the monitor to you, I would avoid using them. YOu can, of course, continue exercising until youo no longer have a waist (around 20 weeks), but can continue other exercises througout the pregnancy.
