Pregnancy After Hernia Repair with Mesh: Safety Concerns & Considerations

Question
I'm 31 years old, and I have 2 children, and the date of my LMP was Feb. 20
I have not had an tests to confirm if I'm pregnant, but I do have a question. I had a hernia repair after I gave birth to my last child (6 years ago). I developed a new hernia higher up from where they put the mesh. I've had two c-sections (both children) and the hernia repair all performed on same scar. My question is..Is it safe to be pregnant with the mesh, and new hernia? Mind you, the hernia is fairly large, about the size of a grapefruit (above the navel), and I also recover poorly after surgeries, 99% of the times I've had to have my incisions reopened and have a debriment done, and then be packed until my incision healed. Do I have to have another c-section done? I would perfer not to, because of my healing poorly? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank You, Nicole

Answer
What were the reasons you had each cesarean section? If they were dne due to unrepeatable causes, you may try for a VBAC. HOwever, if they were repeatable causes, you most likely will need another cesarean section. The presence of a mesh does not cause any problems with a pregnancy and you certainly can carry a pregnancy to term with a mesh in place (no matter how big it is). HOweveer, there is always the possibility that you can develop another hernia. There is no way to know if you will develop an infection again, which may require debridement, opening of the incision, antibiotics, or packing. I do not know your history. You should discuss this with your present obstetrician. Good Luck.
