Birth Control and Medication Interactions After a Car Accident

Question
My girl friend got into a serious car accident on friday of last week.  She was on morphine and they put her on an antiboitic for the four days in the hospital and for the 5 days after.  She had finished her period on thursday.  All the while she taking hydrocodone the generic form of viciton.  We had sex on sunday when she was off the hydrocodne for 12 hours but she was suppose to start her birth control again that same day.  She took two on monday because thats what it said to do.  She was off the antiboitics for three days before we had sex but she didnt take any birth control because it was the fourth week.  Should i get the morning after pill or would the birth control still wrok?

Answer
Hi Ryan,

Your girlfriend is still at risk for pregnancy because antibiotics lessen the effect of the pill.  This can actually have effect on the birth control for a whole month, especially if she has missed taking some of the pills.  So, the best thing to do is use an additional means of birth control for the next month.  Also, I would use the morning after pill this time.
