Feminine Cleansing Cloths: Safety & Impact on Reproductive Health - ACOG Insights

Question
is it safe to use feminine cleansing cloth like eves or playtex. does it have any effect on a woman reproductive system. i always use them after going to the bathrooms. i heared that douching is not safe. so i was just wondering whether the cleansing cloth is also safe. thanks for much.

Answer
Dear Amy,

You are right about douching. Most doctors and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) suggest that women steer clear of douching. All healthy vaginas contain some bacteria and other organisms called the vaginal flora. The normal acidity of the vagina keeps the amount of bacteria down. But douching can change this delicate balance. This may make a woman more prone to vaginal infections. Plus, douching can spread existing vaginal infections up into the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.

Using the wipes is not as risky as douching, but you should be aware of any changes in discharge or irritation. Using a non-scented wipe would also be more advisable than a scented one. Doctors suggest women avoid scented tampons, pads, powders and sprays. These products may increase a woman's chances of getting vaginal infections. Actually, your best, most effective, AND cheapest bet might be to get the hypo-allergenic, sensitive skin baby wipes. These are usually designed to be the least irritating to skin and thus have the least chemicals in them.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
