23 Weeks Pregnant: Concerns About Foodborne Illness (Toxoplasma, Listeria, etc.)

Question
Hi Brenda

I am now 23 weeks. And 3 days ago I ate in a Japanese restaurant, I did not eat sushi, I ate something cooked but cold.  And I had a diarrhea that night, and these few days, I have headache, stiff neck and dizziness etc. I suspect that I am infected by Toxoplasma gondi or Listeria, solmonia(the spelling may be wrong, but the diasease that found in raw eggs) or something like that, do I need to concerned?

Can these disease be detected through blood test or other tests? Is it too soon to be detected in the blood stream? what should I do now?

Hence, I am not sure when it happened, but several years ago, I found my right nipple is "abnormal", usually the nipple is in round shape, but my right nipple is...very "rough", something like warts, the whole nipple is in the same color, but I don't know why it is rough and warts-like, should I consult my OB doctor or should I see a specialist in skin disease? I want to breatfeed my baby, I am afraid that if it is wart on my nipple, my baby will be infected. For your information, I have warts in my foot, and that's why I describe it as warts-like.

Thanks

Answer
Dear Jennifer,

In regard to your nipple, I would suggest that you simply show your OB doctor and he/she will be able to tell you if there is a reason for concern upon examination of it.

As far as the possible infection from what you ate, there would be a chance that your symptoms are related to the food since the timing followed your meal so closely. Food poisoning is a general term for health problems arising from eating contaminated food. Food may be contaminated by bacteria, viruses, environmental toxins, or toxins present within the food itself, such as the poisons in some mushrooms or certain seafood. Symptoms of food poisoning usually involve nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea. Some food-borne toxins can affect the nervous system. Salmonella is one of the most common sources of food poisoning. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include nausea, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea.

Those with toxoplasmosis often don't have any symptoms but when present they can be vague feelings of having the flu with enlarged lymph glands and muscle aching.

Listeriosis, a serious infection caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, is an important public health problem. The disease primarily affects pregnant women, newborns, and adults with weakened immune systems. A person with listeriosis (listeria infection) has fever, muscle aches, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions can occur.

Pregnant women are about 20 times more likely than other healthy adults to get listeriosis. About 1/3 of listeriosis cases happen during pregnancy. During pregnancy, a blood test is the most reliable way to find out if your symptoms are due to listeriosis - or any of these infections. My advice would be to contact your doctor and let him know what you suspect and ask him to run the blood tests to make sure you have not been infected.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
