Pregnancy Concerns After No Penetration: What to Do

Question
Hello Brenda,

Me and my boyfriend had sex last night(Oct 23rd night) and
We always have just casual sex kissing with clothes on. Last night we had same sex naked. I am Virgin and he never went inside me. Last night was just rubbing as usual but naked. Now when he came, his sperm was all over that area.....
SO we got concerned about my pregnancy.....
I immediately and carefully cleaned my vagina area twice and as inside I could go without causing pain....
We visited the doctor next morning and doctor gave me plan B pills. So I have taken that today.

About my periods: My last period was on Sept 24th and I had one more immediately on Nov 2nd...due to some irregularity in my periods.
So that was basic info.
I just have one question is
how to be sure that I am not pregnant?
Since I have taken plan B pills and it looks like today that I may begin my periods......regular one.....

I am confused because there is so much info in all the questions and answers.
My boyfriends' and my only concern is to not to have pregnancy before marriage......
PLEASE GUIDE IN AVOIDING IT COMPLETELY.......100
Our careers will be jeopardized if it happens....

Answer
Dear "gjazz",

Well, from the information you've given me, your chances of conceiving a pregnancy from this particular encounter are very, very low. Not only because you didn't actually have intercourse, but because you also washed up well afterwards, AND took the additional step of taking Plan B emergency contraception.

Now, taking emergency contraception WILL typically alter your menstrual cycles, so be prepared for that. Some women may experience spotting a few days after taking Plan B. At the time of expected menses, approximately 75% of women using Plan B have vaginal bleeding similar to their normal menses, 12-13% bleed more than usual, and 12% bleed less than usual. Most (87%) have their next period within a week of the expected time but some (13%) experience a delay of more than 7 days.

If your period is delayed beyond 7 days of the date you expect to receive it, you should test for pregnancy to make sure you have not conceived. More than likely this will be due to the effects of the hormone in the Plan B, but you will need to make sure. If you have to test, make sure to use 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results. But again, your chances of pregnancy from this encounter sound very low.

As to how to avoid pregnancy 100% - the only absolute way to avoid pregnancy is to avoid sexual intercourse. It sounds like you have done that. The only additional step you can take is to have him ejaculate into a towel, or on your stomach, or somewhere far enough away from the vagina that you do not have to worry about sperm cells traveling into the vaginal canal. Having him wear a condom for your sexual play will also avoid this situation. Because remember, even the pre-ejaculate (the little bit of semen that seeps out before ejaculation) can have a high concentration of sperm cells contained within it. So, even rubbing of the penis against your vaginal area does pose a minimal risk of pregnancy. Also - touching the ejaculate with hands and then touching the vagina or inserting still wet hand/fingers into the vagina can potentially transfer viable sperm cells.

So... abstinence from sex and making sure that semen stays clear of the vaginal area is the only 100% safe way to avoid pregnancy. Lying naked together, kissing each other, heavy petting, even oral sex is safe as far as pregnancy is concerned. (STDs are another matter all together.)

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
