Understanding Placenta Position & Distance (21 Weeks)

Question
i am in 21 week of pregency.on my second ultra sound report shows"PLACENTA:posterior, lower end of placenta is 4.5 cm away from the internal os,lucent area seen at upper end of pklacenta,Gr-1".what's its mean.can u explain me.i am very greatful to you

Answer
Dear Monica,

This sounds fine. It just means that your placenta is on the posterior (spine side) of the uterus - which is typical. It also has measured how far away the bottom tip is from the internal os of the cervix. That is important because doctors want to make sure that the placenta isn't covering or partially covering the opening of the cervix. This can cause what is called a placenta previa and can sometimes necessitate a C-section if the placenta doesn't move off of the opening. Usually placentas will inch their way up and around the backside of the uterus a little bit as the uterus grows. The lucent area was probably an incidental finding and may have been an artifact of the ultrasound imaging. It sounds like your results are just fine for this point in your pregnancy!

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and a Merry Christmas.
