QuestionI was wondering if this sounds like PUPPS to you...First of all, I'll give you some backround info. This is my 3rd pregnancy. I am 35 weeks. This week I started itching on my upper arms. I have tiny bumps on my arms. For a few weeks now, I have had occasional itching and redness under my breasts also. Any ideas? Does it sound like PUPPS?
AnswerDear Amy,
Pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP) normally occurs in first pregnancies during the third trimester with an average onset of 35 weeks. It usually does not affect subsequent pregnancies.
The actual rash of PUPPP almost always begins in the stretch marks (striae) of the abdomen. It does not involve the belly button, which distinguishes it from other common rashes of pregnancy. The rash itself consists of small, red wheals in the stretch marks that grow together to form larger wheals on the abdomen. Sometimes the rash can include small vesicles. Over the next several days, the rash can spread over the thighs, buttocks, breasts, and arms. The rash is very itchy (pruritic), hence the name, but it is essentially harmless to both mother and baby. It is uncomfortable (!), but not harmful or associated with any disease process we are aware of.
It may be that you have developed this even though you are in your 3rd pregnancy and it started in stretch mark under the breasts, rather than on the abdomen. I would suggest that you show your doctor at your next visit and let him/her assess the rash to confirm the diagnosis. The rash really must be seen for a proper diagnosis. The treatment for PUPPP is mainly symptomatic.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
