Abdominal Pain & Spotting Early Pregnancy: What to Know

Question
I am about 5-6 weeks pregnant and 3 days ago my boyfriend and I had rough sex nothing happened that night but the following day I was in bad pain.  I spotted a little that night and today the pain has been less but is still there.  There is no more bleeding but... I was wondering what your thoughts are? FYI this is my second pregnancy.

Answer
Dear Beth,

If the bit of spotting can be directly attributed to the sex which was rougher than normal and stopped within 24 hours, I would not be overly concerned. The discomfort should lessen. If it does not, you should let your doctor know, but it really should.

Unless your bleeding begins again, gets heavy, and the pain worsens, I would not be concerned about a miscarriage. Typical miscarriage symptoms would include:
- Vaginal bleeding that may be light or heavy, constant or irregular. Bleeding typically begins quite heavy and will gradually lessen over the course of 7-10 days. But bleeding with pain is a sign that miscarriage is most likely occurring in the 1st trimester.
- Pain/Cramping - You may have pelvic cramps, abdominal pain, or a persistent, dull ache in your lower back. Pain may start a few hours to several days after bleeding has begun.
- Blood clots or grayish (fetal) tissue passing from the vagina.

Sex is fine and very healthy under normal circumstances of pregnancy, but from here on out you will need to pay closer attention to how "rough" things are getting during sex.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
