QuestionMy baby boy is 5 weeks old and we need to take him to a surgen next week because an absece located next to his anus had intestinal bactial growth pus. The Dr that refered me to see the sergen thinks it may be an anual fistula and that he may need surgery. He acted like this was not a big deal at all....but i am freaking out..this is my first child and hes only 5 weeks old...
-Is this a common problem in children? Is the surgery a big deal? Any info would help alot. Thank you
AnswerDear Megan,
I do apologize for the delay in answering your question. My son was "T-boned" in a wreck last week. I forgot all about coming back online for these questions... I'm sorry for that.
Although infants/pediatrics are not necessarily my area of expertise, I will share some information on this condition which I have researched for you.
An anorectal fistula is an abnormal channel that leads from the anus or rectum usually to the skin near the anus but occasionally to another organ, such as the vagina in females. I cannot speak to how common this is in children, but a fistula in an infant is usually a birth defect and is more common among boys than girls. Anorectal fistulas can cause pain and produce pus. The diagnosis is based on an examination and other viewing techniques. Treatment may involve surgery, but some non-surgical alternatives now exist in some specific cases. You will need to depend upon the assessment of your doctors to determine the most effective treatment method for your baby. As to the type of surgery necessary, that will depend upon the severity of your son's case and again, the surgeon's recommendation.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
