QuestionHi There,
I can't seem to get a straight answer from anyone on whether or not I can exercise and to what level...so hoping you can help!!
I have been trying to get pregnant for 5 years, and have been through countless stimulation cycles as well as 1 In Vitro followed up by 2 frozen cycles. The first frozen cycle was termed a chemical pregnancy and the second ended in a missed miscarriage after 3 months. I did not exercise during this time. I am still trying to get pregnant. I have been very athletic my whole life, from rowing to running and now cycling. I have stopped exercise because I've heard that it can limit my chances. I have put on some weight. I am by no means overweight, but have some extra pounds. I have decided to get back on my bike and keep my heart rate around 150-165 (higher on the inclines (170-175)bpm. Can I exercise while trying to get pregnant and to what level? I don't know if my situation is different because I 've had such a hard time, but I know girls who exercise much more than I do and they're fine!! I would love some input and some solid direction!
Thanks so much for your time, it's really appreciated.
AnswerOnly women who have stopped menstruation due to obsessive exercise and extreme calorie restriction should stop exercise and gain weight in order to become pregnant.
There was one meta-analysis study done in Europe which showed a correlation between high impact/high volume/high intensity exercise and miscarriage. But these findings have yet to be repeated in any other studies. Long distance running would fall into this category.
Moderate level exercise is totally safe, and should be a part of your life. In terms of intensity, use perceived exertion, and stay in a zone that you feel is "somewhat difficult."
Since you say you don't know why your situation is different, both your partner and you should see a specialist, if you haven't already, to determine why conception and carrying a pregnancy to term is challenging for you.
