QuestionQUESTION: On September 30th I had my 1st miscarriage. I had a low/slow rising HCG the whole time. At about 5wks hcg dropped but went up 48hrs later. They said it was probably disappearing twin. Carried other till 7wk 1day. I have had 2 healthy pregs prior to this. We REALLY want a 3rd but I haven't ovulated since. I lost it naturally w/heavy bleeding and then light bleeding for the next 2-3 days. I called dr 2 days ago & was told to take home preg test. 3 negative test later i'm so confused as to whats going on. I took ovulation test for last 2 days as well and nothing...any idea when my cycle my show its face again or will i have to wait forever now for baby #3?????
ANSWER: Hi there.
A miscarriage after 2 healthy pregnancies must be a huge shock for you, especially if you were carrying twins.
If you had your miscarriage on the 30th september, then you can count this as the first day of your last period. You do ovulate soon after but it's wise to leave it at the very least 1 full cycle til you try again. The recommended time is 3 months......this is to allow your body to heal & build up a nice thick lining for the fertilised egg to settle in. It's also easier to work out the EDD & reduces the chance of recurrent miscarriage.
It's only been a couple of wks since your M/C. It can take aprox 6-8wks for your cycle to return to normal, but don't be suprised if it takes a little longer or if you have your first period on time. If you find that after 6 months you still haven't had a period, then do contact your doctor as you may need some medication which will kick-start your system into ovulating again.
Take this time to look after yourself, eat well & prepare for your next pregnancy.
I do hope this has helped, if you have any further questions then pleasen don't hesitate to contact me.
Kindest Regards

QUESTION: Thanks for your reply, but I gave you the wrong date of my MC. It was August 30th, not September 30th so it has been longer than just a couple of weeks. (my fault, brain is a little out of sorts lately....) Does this change your answer/advise at all? thanks
AnswerHi there
Sorry for the short delay in replying, I was called away for the weekend on an emergency.
I'd say my advice will still apply. It does take time to get back on track after a miscarriage & I know how frustrating this can be. All you want is to get back to some sort of normality.
You don't say your age, but if you're over 35 and/or have cycle problems (such as PCOS or irregular cycles) I would wait just 4 months before seeing your doctor. Fertility issues & age can play a factor in how fast your body gets back in synch & whether you need a little help in ovulating again.
However, as you have never had an issue before I can't see any obvious problems & your periods will soon return.
I would put the ovulation kit away, relax and look after yourself. Being stressed can alone put a hold on things, so just sit back & wait for your period. If you're regular, you may find that your periods return 8wks after your M/C. I can set my watch by mine & had my 1st period exactly 4wks after my M/C as I had a 28 day cycle. This does not apply to everyone but my research has shown this happens regularly.
I do hope that this has helped. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to come back :)
Wishing you the best of luck for the future.
Kindest Regards
Sarah
