Catapres for Menopause: Understanding Alternatives to HRT & Potential Side Effects

Question
My doctor prescribed the catapres tables for my hot flushes and night sweats, as he does not believe in HRT.  But he did not take my blood pressure etc. I was unsure after I got the tables with the consumer medicine information leaflet.  The leaflet explaned side effects and one was about numbness and I do get numbness in my toes.
I was orignaly prescribed the HRT by my gyno as he said the good outway the bad, due to keeping the body healthy and bones stronger, but my GP does not agree with gyno. Please help me to understand my best options for my health.  I have already tried numerious natural health remidies

Question -
Should I have my blood presure taken before taking Catapres tablets?
Also out of HRT or Catapres, which one would be better for my health?

Answer -
First let me clarify, I am not a doctor or a nurse. My understanding is that Catapress is a prescribed medication for high blood pressure, which begs the question, why would you take or it (or how can you get it) without a doctor's prescription? In which case, your blood pressure must have been taken by the doctor. Your second question is confusing because HRT and Catapress are not typically drugs you can compare. My best recommendation is to speak with a doctor if you haven't already.

Answer
You'll have to ask your doctor about your blood pressure and taking catapres. I can't help you on that one. Now that I know you have hot flashes, I can tell you what has been successful for some women.

Diet is critical when we get older. If you can drop sugar and caffeine, as well as any foods that cause an "allergic" reaction in your body, you'll will have a big head start on hot flashes. For me, caffeine makes me flush immediately. I eat primarily vegetables (dark), salads, and lean meat (chicken and fish). If you don't have trouble with blood sugar, also eat fruit.

Exercise is also critical. Moderate exercise every day. It's so important to keep the body moving.

Stay hydrated. I drink at least 80 oz of water every day.

Some women have had success with natural progesterone cream. Now way to know until you try.

Get a doctor who has studied alternative treatments for menopause such as bioidentical hormones. Go to this portal website: www.everythingmenopause.com and go to the treatment options and find a doctor in your area. Have the doctor do a hormone panel so you know where your estrogen and progesterone levels are. Read around this site for more information, and also this is a very helpful book www.howtoconquermenopause.com

Good luck.
