Understanding Abnormal Blood Test Results After Infection

Question
My son recently recovered (approx 2 weeks ago) from MRSA infection in a spider bite and impantigo.  All wounds are healed. He has been having some questionable episodes. I had his blood drawn at MD office. Results were mostly normal except for:  Neutrophils 37 (norm 38 to 58), Lymphocytes 53 (norm 28 to 48), and BUN/Cretinine ratio 37 (norm 8 to 27). Should I be worried about any of these results, or is it just part of his recovery for them to be off like this? His onset of infection was 7-5-08 and his last antibiotic dose was 7-15-08.

Answer
Hi Jessica, I'd be glad to try and answer your question.  How old is your son?  If he's younger than 12 years of age, it's normal for his neutrophils to be lower and his lymphocytes to be higher than an adult.  So I wouldn't be too concerned about those results.  His BUN/creatinine ratio is a little high at 37.  But I believe that could be from him still recovering from that serious infection.  I would ask his doctor to maybe recheck this test in a few weeks, when he's more fully recovered.  He could have some slight kidney dysfunction (which is what BUN and creatinine measure), maybe from the (probably) high doses of antibiotics that he was on.
