Decoding Abnormal Blood Test Results: What Do They Mean?

Question
My Dr has signed off my blood tests as being OK, but some
of the results are not within the normal range. Here are
the 'abnormal' results I got. Are any of these anything to
be concerned about?

S ALT 32 (range 5-30 U/L)
S IRON 3 (range 5-30 umol/L)
S TRF 3.3 (range 2.0 - 3.6 g/L - one year ago this was in
the 'high' range but now they have said it is normal)
White cells 3.8 (range 4.0-11.0 x10^9/L)

One year ago the following results were 'abnormal'
ESR 1 (range 3-12 mm/hr)
T-Bili 43 (range 3-15 umol/L)
S Iron 33 (range 5-30 umol/L)
S TRF 3.3 (range 2.0-3.6 g/L)
S Ferritin 16 (range 30-200 ng/mL)

Do these results suggest I am anaemic or have any liver
problems? I had these tests done in Australia and I am
sorry if the references etc are different to those used in
the US.

Answer
Hi Samantha.  I'd be glad to try and answer your question.  You're right, the references are indeed a little different than here in the U.S., but since you provided the normal ranges, I can still try and help.  The only abnormal results you have that could be of some concern are the total bilirubin, the iron, and the ferritin.  The iron and ferritin are similar tests, testing for iron deficiency anemia.  Since your results are low, you could be anemic.  Total bilirubin could indicate liver damage, and your result is moderately higher than the normal range, so it's important that you have further testing (more lab work, X-rays, or scans) to check your liver.  I recommend that you check with your doctor.
