Ureaplasma & Infertility: Understanding Treatment & Persistent Symptoms

Question
QUESTION: Hello,
I have done many tests to find out what could be causing infertility and frequent urination(~20 a day) The only thing found was ureaplasma, which I have for more than a year. I am trying to get rid of it, but no luck. Many of my friends got pregnant after curing it. I've been to different doctors, currently trying to cure it with urologist. I'm on my third antibiotic course, but symptoms(frequent urination) do not disappear. Do you have any advice on how to cure ureaplasma? I'm desperate. Thank you!

ANSWER: Hello Jenny,

Do you have ureaplasma in the urine?  That is a little unusual.  I presume your urologist is looking at other reasons for your bladder symptoms.

The only ureaplasma that could be important in infertility is if it is cultured from the vagina and/or cervix.  Usually, it is very easy to treat, and doxycycline is the most common antibiotic used.  It usually responds immediately.

It is hard to imagine that this is the only problem, however. You might want to consider having an infertility evaluation done.  Your problem might be different from your friends.

QUESTION: Thank you for the answer.
Is it really easy to cure? The doctors I went to see told me that for some people it might be easy, for some hard. And it seems to be hard for me.
I used doxycycline for the first time. It didn't help. I don't remember the second antibiotics, but those didn't help as well.
Yes, my gynecologist found Ureaplasma, cultured from vagina. Later I went to Urologist since I had frequent urination problem. He did an urine test and found the bacteria there and told me that often exactly this bacteria is cauing frequent urination. My Urologoist gave me Clarithromycin. I'm using it now. But I'm afraid that it won't work as well. Are there any other effective drugs for Ureaplasma?

Answer
Hello Again,

You are an exception.  Usually ureaplasma is easy to treat and not a cause of symptoms.  We usually only check for it with infertility.  I don't usually check for it with other kinds of vaginal infections.  It is a bacteria that some women carry in their vagina.

It sounds like your doctors are treating you appropriately.  I would just go along with their recommendations.
