QuestionHello, I had a 3 day embryo transfer on 12/7. On the 15th, I began spotting and on the 16th it became more like a full on period. I have taken 3 pregnancy tests (12/15,16,17) and all have come back positive. I am scheduled for my beta tomorrow. Is there anyway I can be pregnant (as indicated by the home pregnancy tests) despite having a period?
AnswerHello Jewel from the U.S.,
Yes. We do see a large incidence of bleeding with IVF for unknown reasons. Some suspect that it may be progesterone effect, especially if you use vaginal progesterone. The progesterone may be causing cervical bleeding. It can also be a bad sign for the pregnancy, meaning that something is wrong with the implantation despite being pregnant, that will eventually lead to a miscarriage. At this point, that is an unknown.
My recommendation would be to take a wait and see approach. Do the pregnancy tests as recommended, continue your medications as recommended, avoid intercourse and heavy activities, and wait and see how things turn out. Nature will take its own course from here.
