Prolactin Levels & Brain MRI: Understanding Your Risk

Question
Hello, Dr.
This is Joy.
Last July, my prolactin was 24.9
my prolactin level on 01/07/2010(post ovulation) was 110.4
then Jan 12th(day 2 of my period), prolactin= 88, E2=26, FSH=7
My infertility doctor wants to do MRI of brain.
I told my doc that I want  to redo the prolactin level drawn again, so I did it again today, Jan 21st.
question #1) What are my chances of having pituatary tumor at these levels?

Day 1 of my period was Jan 11th, 2010.
I scheduled for MRI of brain on Jan 29th,day 19th of my period.(right after ovulation?)
question #2)Am I  safe to go for the testing even if I get pregnant because  it's still an early phase?(my nurse practioner said  it should be ok)

Answer
Hello Joy from the U.S.,

It is unlikely that a tumor will be found with a level less than 100, but it is not unreasonable to check.  Even is a very small tumor were found, the treatment would be the same at this point.  That treatment is the use of bromocriptine (Parlodel) or Dostinex.

In addition, the MRI does not use radiation so should be fine even if you were pregnant.

The only other concern, is the prolactin level needs to be done fasting and first thing in the morning because it can be influenced by many things such as sleep, eating, stress, activity.

I hope this helps,
