QuestionHello Doctor,
I am 30 years old writing from India. I'm on my 34th week of pregnancy. Is there any way to test the mercury level in the blood / urine? Because I eat fish (like Mackerel) regularly. Will it create any problems to the baby? Please advise.
AnswerHello Mrs. Satish from India,
Mercury levels are checked by blood test. You need to see a doctor who can order the test for you. Excessive mercury levels during pregnancy can lead to fetal defects including brain abnormalities such as mental retardation. In the U.S., pregnant woman are recommended to avoid eating deep ocean fish because of increased levels of mercury in these fish. However, it will only become increased if you eat these fish more than once per week.
