Post-Embryo Transfer: What to Avoid for a Healthy Pregnancy

Question
Hello-
I just had 2 embryos transferrred this past week through ICSI IVF. My husband is freaking out and trying to prevent me from doing many things I would normally do because he think it will somehow alter the possible pregnancy. The only restrictions my dr office gave me was no baths or hot tubs for now. I would like to know if its safe to get my hair dyed and get a manicure and pedicure. What about cleaning products and vacumming? Is there any thing I need to completely avoid? Caffeine? Sorry but I dont want to do anything to ruin this for us given what we have been through but I also dont want to stop living. Can you advise? Thanks!

Answer
Hello Jenn from the U.S.,

There are no specific activity restrictions because essentially it is as if you just had intercourse and are waiting to see if you become pregnant.  Normal (non-IVF) couples don't take any precautions and do just fine.  If it is going to happen, meaning that the embryo and uterine lining do what they are supposed to do, then it will happen.  The only restrictions I give my patients are no heavy exercise, like jumping, aerobics, karate, etc. because the reduced blood flow can affect the blood flow to the uterus, and no sex/intercourse because the bumping can cause uterine cramping, which can impair implantation.  Everything else is fine.  There is absolutely no reason for you to not have your hair dyed, have a manicure or pedicure.  However, there is one recommendation I do have in that regard.  If your husband does not want you to do whatever, and you don't get pregnant or have a miscarriage, he may blame your activities for that outcome eventhough they would not really be related.  Since he has a vested interest in this as well, it would be wise of you to comply with his wishes.
