hi
we have a 3 year old grand daughter whom can not keep milk down. she had an intestinal surgery as a preemie at 2 lbs and has affected the diet, can you refer me to any help.? she goes for regular checkups but so far this has not ben able to be overcome in a minute amount. they only try to give hera 1/2 oz or so, of some kind of milk and it just does not work. i can't tell you what the surgery was, but it was a procedure that later was reversed. she also now is on a seizyre medication, doing fine otherwise.
thanks

Given that she was a premie, they probably did a partial colectomy for NEC-necrotizing enterocolitis. Premie's get that, which is where a segment of the large intestine loses blood supply and dies off.
Anyways, the child may also have lost the ability to digest lactose, the proteins in milk. That isn't uncommon. You can try soy milk products ot simply skip it. The good signs are slow steady weight gain. Bad signs are night sweats, fever, and weight loss in addition to the vomiting. I would mention that to his primary doctor to discuss alternative forms of nutrition if it is a food intolerance.
Good luck with her....
AnswerYes, they will work if the child is truly lactose intolerant. There are two types of products... one that simply removes the lactose and replaces it with another product like soy, or you can take the enzymes that you are lacking, called Lactase, prior to drinking milk or eating cheese, etc.
The milk is available at the grocery store next to the normal milk. It is lactose free milk.
Hope this helps....
