Recurring Ulcer or GERD? Understanding Symptoms & Treatment
QuestionI had an Ulcer perhaps 7 yr ago & was put on Antibotic & it took care of it. I also have GERD & use Nexium. It seems as off late, I am bothered what I think is the Ulcer that maybe has returned. I know the symptoms of Gerd. It appears that at nite all is O.K, but when I get up & eat a little it starts & the more I eat seems to help it & that is why I think the Ulcer has returned. My Dr. thinks its not impossible for an ulcer to return. My question is, would it be pratical to take a session of antibotics to see if the problem goes away & if not then have the Gastrogogist take a look.Dr. kind of left it up to me, but leans toward a look see, but I am of the opinion to take the least invasive method to start & then have a look see. No matter how small the risk, an invasive procedure still is a risk or am I risking more without a look see even if the antibotic took care of the problem. I am aware that an ulcer is caused by a bacteria.
AnswerNot all ulcers are caused by bacteria (H. Pylori). Seeing as how you are on Nexium already and are still having symptoms, my preference would be to take a look and get a definitive diagnosis. That is actually a fairly strong indication for the upper endoscopy. I would not treat you with antibiotics at this point without a more definitive answer.
