HMO vs. PPO: Understanding Your Health Insurance Options
QuestionDear Dr. Aukerman,
What is the difference between an HMO and a PPO? Is one better than the other?
AnswerThe HMO purpose is to maintain health status by providing a menu of health related services such as periodic assessments and appropriate treatments.
The PPO is a group of preferred providers of health services generally for an HMO or an insurance group.
There is not a relationship between the two that would allow one to be better. There is more choice of providers in an PPO but less individual cost in the HMO but less choices. OK?
